Breast Implant Exchange

Breast implant exchange at Toronto’s Sovereign Cosmetic Surgery allows you to choose new breast implants that suit your lifestyle, compliment your figure, and offer peace of mind.

Breast Implant Revision

It’s also called breast implant replacement or breast implant revision. Breast implant exchange is a way to upgrade and fine-tune your proportions using the newest generation of Health Canada-approved breast implants available.

Some patients choose to permanently remove breast implants for various personal reasons. However, it is common to opt for a refresh of breast size, shape, or brand of implants as well.

If you’re no longer in love with the look that you chose years ago, if you’ve noticed breast sagging, or if you are considering cosmetic improvements, a breast implant exchange alone or combined with another cosmetic enhancement could help you reach your goals.

Sovereign’s talented plastic surgeons are body contouring specialists. We approach each patient’s plan with personalized dedication and attention to detail. No two bodies are alike, and there is a wide spectrum of high-quality implant options that can be customized just for you.

Our welcoming surgical suites at 59 Hayden Street, Toronto, offer discretion and VIP service in a beautiful, contemporary space. You’re invited to learn more about your options and schedule a private consultation today.

Toronto Breast Implant Exchange – Overview and Techniques

Breast implant exchange surgery is often a straightforward switch from one implant size or type to another. Breast lift (mastopexy) or revision cases will involve more complex alterations to the implant pocket, the removal of sagging skin, or the removal of excess scar tissue surrounding the implants.

Individual factors affect the techniques used and the length of the breast implant exchange procedure. Generally, an implant exchange takes less than 2 hours. If you decide to undergo a breast lift along with new implants, the implant exchange cost and recovery time will reflect any added adjustments.

Incisions

Breast implant exchange surgery typically requires incisions in the inframammary fold (IMF), which is the natural crease under the breast. If you had a peri-areolar incision for your initial procedure (around the nipple), it may be possible to use the same route again. The IMF incision provides the best visibility and access for a surgeon to adjust your breast tissue or insert larger implants. Well-healed scars are usually hidden and faint.

En bloc implant removal is the comprehensive technique used to remove implants while managing a rupture or treating tightened scar tissue around implants. It means “in one piece.”

A capsulorrhaphy reduces the size of implant pockets (the space inside, under the breast tissue). This can help keep new implants in an ideal position.

In other cases, simply opening the pocket with a capsulotomy will make room and allow free movement of your new implants.

Your surgeon will discuss your situation, your concerns, and all available options to make sure you have the treatment that benefits you the most with excellent results.

How Do I Know If My Breast Implants Need to Be Exchanged?

Do breast implants have to be replaced every 10 years? This question is common. However, the advanced technology used to develop and test breast implant devices today means that they do not have a set “expiry” or date that they must be exchanged. Breast implants that are intact and that cause no problems may be enjoyed for many years.

Women typically decide to replace their breast implants because they want a different look or a more natural “feel” and shape to the breasts. Often, there is no medical motivation for the change.

However, if you were diagnosed with an implant rupture on one or both sides, timely replacement surgery is advised.

Issues such as capsular contracture are often mild and may not bother you. If your breasts appear asymmetric, change dramatically, or cause discomfort, you can schedule a consultation to discuss a breast implant exchange or revision.

Toronto’s top breast implant exchange surgery factors:

  • Increased size or projection of breasts
  • A decrease in breast size and weight
  • Breast contour rejuvenation with a mastopexy and implant exchange
  • Implant upgrade to a safer, new prosthesis
  • Implant position change (over or under the muscle)
  • Saline to silicone, or vice versa

Breast Implant Exchange Recovery

How Long is the Recovery After Breast Implant Exchange?

Each cosmetic surgery procedure is tailored to the individual, but some standard elements of your recovery can be expected.

After resting under observation with your nurse, you’ll be able to return home or to your hotel with a friend, family member, or caregiver as soon as you are cleared by your surgeon.

Steri strips (medical tape) will be placed directly over your incisions, and over the strips a gauze pad may be placed that can be removed the next day. Some breast implant patients will be advised to wear a supportive surgical bra or band after surgery. Your surgeon will discuss that with you.

Bathing

For the first day, only sponge baths are permitted, as you’ll need to keep the breast area dry and clean. You may be allowed to shower the next day.

We will provide a detailed schedule for your aftercare and instructions to ensure that you heal quickly and comfortably.

Medication will be prescribed to reduce discomfort and inflammation along with antibiotics. Thankfully, many people describe the recovery process after breast implant exchange as less painful and faster than their first surgery. Within just a few days, most of your swelling or bruising will begin to resolve.

Plan to take 1 to 2 weeks off from work and strenuous activities. Working out at the gym, swimming, and heavy lifting will need to wait until your surgeon advises you – usually 4 to 6 weeks.

It is often helpful to arrange assistance with driving, childcare, and pet care for a week or two.

You can talk with your surgeon about special events that you may have planned to ensure the most convenient and safe recovery.

Breast Implant Exchange Costs in Toronto

At your consultation, we will provide you with a personalized quote that outlines the total fees for your procedure. Costs vary depending on individual treatments. The average price for replacing breast implants is similar to standard breast augmentation.

Is breast implant exchange covered by insurance? In Ontario, provincial health coverage (OHIP) related to breast surgery almost exclusively covers mastectomy and reconstruction. These are treatments related to breast cancer. Elective implant replacement can certainly have benefits for emotional health and confidence. However, this type of procedure is considered cosmetic and is not usually covered by insurance.

Sovereign is pleased to connect our patients with reputable medical financing companies that can make payment more manageable. We’ll let you know how to apply quickly and easily. Most patients are approved within 24 hours.
