Gynecomastia

Male breast reduction helps a significant number of Toronto men get the chest contours they want.

Chest Contouring

This common aesthetic concern results from an overgrowth of male breast tissue, leading to enlarged breasts. Many people ask what causes male gynecomastia, and the answer for you could include one or more factors, either temporary or permanent.

Male breast development is common during puberty as a temporary result of hormonal fluctuations. However, for a small percentage of men, the firm, raised, and fuller-looking breast tissue doesn’t diminish beyond their teens.

Weight gain may contribute to breast development for men due to fat deposits (lipomastia).

We often see a combination of factors for our Toronto gynecomastia patients, including lipomastia and glandular tissue.

Whatever the cause of male breasts, costs can be severe for self-esteem and social lives. Many guys avoid swimming, working out shirtless, and even intimate encounters because of embarrassment about their appearance.

Can Gynecomastia (Male Breast) Reduction Surgery Help You?

Male breast reduction surgery targets the breast tissue and fat causing unwanted fullness in the chest. When non-surgical weight loss and muscle-building efforts don’t deliver the desired results, men may choose surgical, permanent improvement.

Male breast reduction can:
  • Remove glandular breast tissue
  • Remove fat
  • Remove excess skin, if required
  • Reduce the areola size if desired (a type of breast lift)

Each person’s aesthetic goals and unique situation will be assessed before suggesting personalized treatment. Is male breast reduction surgery best for you? You’re welcome to book a consultation at Sovereign and find out.

Can Gynecomastia Go Away with Exercise?

Certainly, excess body fat can be reduced through diet and fitness interventions, but if you have this condition, you’ll be frustrated by your efforts at the gym. Glandular (breast) tissue won’t be removed without specialized help.

Our compassionate, experienced surgeons at Sovereign Plastic Surgery are here to help. We treat a high number of male patients in Toronto with body-contouring procedures, including male breast reduction, liposuction, abdominal etching, and more. Read on to learn about treatment options.

How is Male Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?

At Sovereign Plastic Surgery, we specialize in offering diverse techniques to ensure the fastest recovery and least visible scars possible for you. Because people are unique, your male breast reduction surgical plan may differ from another patient’s plan.

When the breast fullness is due to fatty tissue, liposuction alone will likely be used. Glandular tissue can be broken up and removed this way somewhat, but you may require an incision at the perimeter of the areola for access as well.

Firm, fibrous breast tissue is usually removed through short (1- to 2-mm) incisions. However, in cases of excess skin, longer incisions around the areola may be utilized to reduce sagging and improve breast contours.

Your gynecomastia correction at Sovereign will take place in our fully equipped, private hospital facility. Our designation of Level 3 out-of-hospital premises (OHP) exceeds safety standards and offers the utmost in privacy and luxury for your procedure.

Under general anaesthesia, the unwanted tissue will be removed, and a few sutures placed to close the incision cleanly. Fat, glandular tissue and excess skin are artfully excised or contoured to create the desired flat, smooth appearance.

The male breast reduction process takes roughly 1 to 2 hours in most cases. Once complete, a stretchy, chest compression garment will be applied, and you’ll be gently awakened.

Recovery & Considerations

What is male breast reduction recovery like?

You can return home with a friend or family member as soon as you’re up to it following male breast reduction surgery. We’ll recommend that you rest and take it easy, but you should walk slowly and move around regularly for the first couple of days.

We prescribe pain medication. However, many men state that discomfort is not severe following male breast reduction surgery. Aside from mild swelling and sensitivity, recovery is straightforward.

You’ll be advised to avoid strenuous activity, including aerobics and working out at the gym. Many patients find it challenging to be less active for a short time, but the benefits are well worth your patience. To help prevent infections, no baths, swimming pools, or hot tubs are permitted until the incisions are healed.

Most people return to office work 5 to 7 days after male breast reduction. Your plastic surgeon will let you know if a modified work schedule is needed after that, depending on your job requirements.

At 1 week post-op, we’ll see you for a follow-up to remove any sutures. Light exercise can begin by 2 to 3 weeks in most cases. You’ll see most swelling resolved by 3 to 4 months when you’re ready for gynecomastia before and after photos.

Considerations and Risks for Gynecomastia Surgery

With all surgeries, there are risks related to anaesthesia, infection, or bleeding, which are reduced though vigilant safety protocols, follow-up care, and skilled techniques.

To reduce swelling and the risk of bleeding after male breast reduction, chest movement and increased blood pressure are advised against while healing. Hematoma (a collection of blood) or seroma (fluid collection) are possible and require medical care to drain.

In rare cases, infection, poor wound closure, or uneven/overcorrected results may be a concern. Experienced plastic surgeons take care not to remove too much tissue, so the results appear natural.

Though male breast reduction scars are well-hidden and small whenever possible, sometimes darkening or raised scarring occurs. Because nicotine reduces blood flow in the skin, it can lead to complications. We therefore advise patients to avoid smoking and nicotine products before and after male breast reduction surgery for at least 2 weeks.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Male Breast Reduction in Toronto?

If you are a male struggling with unwanted breast enlargement, we’ll be happy to see you for a consultation. There are several medical and health factors to understand before creating a plan to reveal the body you want.

Sometimes patients develop breast tissue because of medication or supplement side effects. Some disease processes or steroid side effects cause male breast enlargement. Your surgeon will ask you essential, detailed questions about your health picture to ensure you receive safe and practical advice.

14 to 16-year-olds sometimes inquire about surgery for gynecomastia. However, their chest appearance is often temporary. Once puberty has ended, if the problem of breast tissue persists beyond the teens, they may be a candidate for male breast reduction.

Male breast reduction candidates often include men with:
  • A small, firm protrusion of breast tissue under the nipple
  • A moderate amount of breast tissue with no skin excess
  • Significant breast tissue and skin excess or drooping

Since gynecomastia has so many contributing factors and may be temporary, we’ll ask you to bring a complete medical history and be prepared to confidentially discuss drug use and history since your safety. Optimal results depend on it.

Imaging, breast biopsy, and other tests are sometimes advised if an underlying medical condition is suspected.

Pseudo-gynecomastia (excess skin post-weight loss) also brings us clients, and we’re happy to provide useful treatment options.
