Blepharoplasty

Sovereign Cosmetic Surgery invites you to explore the possibilities of advanced facial artistry.

Rejuvenate

The most expressive facial feature is often a person’s eyes. It’s also one of the first areas to show aging. Blepharoplasty at Toronto’s Sovereign Cosmetic Surgery can benefit the upper, lower, or both eyelids. Our skilled plastic surgeons also custom-tailor eyelid surgery to suit individual ethnicity and features.

Designed to rejuvenate the eyelids, blepharoplasty is the medical name to describe the surgical alteration of the eyelids for cosmetic enhancement.

Men and women of all ages choose this popular procedure for a variety of reasons. Let’s take a closer look at what eyelid rejuvenation could do for you!

Blepharoplasty to Address Eyelid Aging

The skin around your eyes is exceptionally thin, while the muscles and ligaments supporting the tissue beneath it are delicate as well. This is the primary reason why signs of aging like hooded eyelids and crow’s-feet appear here in midlife and beyond.

Depending on your genetic makeup, skin thickness, and environmental influences, you might see the skin above and below your eyes begin to sag as previously strong supportive structures become lax. Fat pads surrounding the eyes may shift and protrude or shrink, leaving hollows.

Puffy under-eye bags are a common complaint, not always due to fatigue or water retention. And while eye bags can be a hereditary trait, gravity and time tend to make them more pronounced. Likewise, a hooded eye shape may not bother you in your younger years, but it can evolve into excessively drooping upper eyelids.

Perhaps you’ve tried high-quality eye creams claiming to smooth puffy eyes and eliminate fine lines. Unfortunately, there is minimal effect that topical lotions can have on your eyelid skin and deeper tissue. While the Sovereign Cosmetic Surgery team recommends preserving skin’s natural hydration and applying sun protection daily, there may come a time when your perpetually tired appearance calls for the rejuvenating power of a blepharoplasty.

Sovereign Cosmetic Surgery in Toronto welcomes you to schedule your consultation and discover how a transformational eyelid procedure can brighten and revive your eyes.

Blepharoplasty Toronto

Toronto Blepharoplasty Techniques

The number of patients requesting eyelid surgery is increasing. This may be in part due to the variety of approaches available and the harmonious results of blepharoplasty added to other facial procedures. The cosmetic surgeons at Sovereign typically perform this surgery for the following reasons:

Upper Eyelid Drooping

Eyelid ptosis refers to the drooping or hooding of the upper lids. In some cases, as people age, their eyelids droop so significantly that their vision is impaired. Even when they are not extreme, hooded upper lids can obscure the natural crease, shrinking areas where women typically apply eyeshadow and liner. The eyes appear smaller and tired. Even catching up on sleep and feeling energetic won’t reverse the weary, aged appearance of sagging eyelids.

Upper eyelid blepharoplasty aims to “open up” the eyes. Excessive fat pads can also be removed or repositioned during this surgery. Care is taken not to remove too much fat tissue, as a hollowed, bony upper-eye contour has an aging effect.

Incisions are made in the natural eyelid crease, which allows your facial surgeon access to “frowning” corrugator muscles, if desired. Hair-thin sutures close the incisions once the excess skin is excised, and eyelid lifts are known to heal remarkably fast with minimal scarring.

Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty

Youthful lower eyelids often have a smooth contour and blend softly with the upper cheek. The eyelid margin should create a seal along the eye and the bottom of the iris.

Shifting fat pads along with diminished skin elasticity lead to puffy, baggy undereyes for many people. While hollowed, indented areas can be revolumized using fat grafts or dermal filler, 3D bags are removed through lower blepharoplasty.

Lower eyelid surgery is done using different techniques that depend on the individual patient’s needs.

Incisions may follow along the lower lashline externally, or they may be placed on the inner lid, where they are completely invisible.

The external lower blepharoplasty method is most appropriate when stretched, sagging skin is present. Some people experience eyelid muscle laxity, which causes the lower lid to gape visibly and fat pads to protrude. The lashline incision allows access to tighten delicate ligaments and remove a small ellipse of skin. Fat can be removed or repositioned as needed.

Fine sutures placed near the lashes heal without leaving noticeable scars in most cases.

The internal incision route is called transconjunctival. Often recommended for younger patients with good skin tone, it gives the cosmetic surgeon access to remove the fat causing puffiness while leaving the lower eyelid skin smooth and intact.

With under-eye fat reduced after a blepharoplasty, the lower lid skin will lie flat for a youthful, rested appearance.

Blepharoplasty Combined with Facelift Surgery

Both upper and lower eyelid rejuvenation can be done at the same time as a facelift, and they often are.

Your surgeon must be experienced in this specific technique, as the multiple components working together in balance require in-depth knowledge and artistry. Removing too much fat from upper or lower eyelid areas may cause a hollowed appearance, while skin excision must be planned to leave no undesirable tension or distortion.

The toned, lifted result of a facelift surgery can be beautifully complete when the eyelids are refreshed at the same time.

Blepharoplasty Recovery

There are inherent risks and instructions to be aware of whenever you are planning a cosmetic surgery. However, when you take the recommended time off and care for yourself, you’ll ensure the best possible results.

The recovery process following blepharoplasty is experienced differently by everyone. Initially, your eyelids and even cheeks may appear very swollen or bruised for 3 to 4 days post-op. That is because your face is exceptionally vascular, and the eyes are surrounded by sensitive skin. Thankfully, the temporary inflammation usually looks worse than it feels.

You’ll be advised to elevate your head and shoulders while resting and avoid bending over, which can increase pain and facial pressure.

This is a great time to catch up on audio books or the podcasts you enjoy, because resting your eyes will help ease any discomfort. We will provide a prescription for pain medication as needed along with advice to help soothe the area and heal quickly.

Most Toronto blepharoplasty patients can return to work within 1 to 2 weeks of surgery.
