Upper Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty in Toronto (or upper eyelid surgery) is more in demand than ever. Perhaps the rise in eyelid lifts is due to eyes being one of the few features that are visible while much of the population wears masks. Whether FaceTiming, on a Zoom call, or communicating in person, the eyes reveal your mood, energy, and unfortunately, your age.

Even in normal times, the eyes and brows are expressive and draw focus. However, the skin of your eyelids is just about the thinnest anywhere on your body, so gravity, dynamic muscle movement, and age lead to sagging or hooded upper lids even before wrinkles appear elsewhere.

We’ve all weathered a stressful year, but your eyes don’t need to show weariness or make you look older than you feel. Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgery designed to tighten and smooth the skin above and below the eyes. Upper blepharoplasty focuses on the upper lids to remove excess tissue, reposition or remove fat, and sometimes lift the outer eye contour for a more youthful appearance.

This straightforward procedure is often completed in less than 1 hour and may be combined with a brow lift or a facelift for a transformative rejuvenation. Find out what blepharoplasty could do for your confidence when you book your consultation at Sovereign Cosmetic Surgery.

Rejuvenating the Upper Eyelids

Blepharoplasty for upper eyelids can result in a brighter, awake appearance and reveal more lid above the lash line. Female patients often report that it’s easier to apply eye makeup after their procedure or that they need less of it because their eyes look bigger and vibrant.

Overhanging upper eyelid skin can shrink the eye area, hide the lashes, and even obscure vision in more advanced cases of ptosis. Puffiness of the upper eye also appears with age when the delicate supportive ligaments and skin become loose and allow fat to protrude.

If your eyes have changed over time to appear puffier, squinty, or hooded, you may not see a visible crease or eyelid definition. The outer eye may also slant downward, lending a sad, tired appearance. It’s a frustrating issue, because no amount of rest, healthy diet, or topical eye creams will re-firm the loose, lax skin.

Your upper eyelid blepharoplasty may involve removing an ellipse of the eyelid skin, a small amount of fat, or even accessing the corrugator “frowning” muscles to further lift and smooth the upper lids and brow zone.

Meticulous care is taken to avoid overcorrection by removing too much skin or fat. At Sovereign, our facial plastic surgeons believe that naturally beautiful results never appear fake or overdone. Very fine incisions placed discreetly in the upper crease heal to be so subtle that, in most cases, they aren’t noticeable. Your procedure may either be performed with the use of IV sedation or under general anaesthetic.

Asian Eyelid Surgery

Upper eyelid surgery isn’t always requested to turn back the clock on eyelid ageing. It’s also a common procedure choice for Asian Canadians and people who naturally have a “mono-lid” rather than a double eyelid with a defined crease. Asian double-fold surgery is essentially the same as upper blepharoplasty. However, if you seek eyelid crease definition, your surgical plan will be highly personalized for you, your features, and your goals.

In Toronto, Asian blepharoplasty is ideal for men or women who want to sculpt or define puffy upper lids, create an eyelid crease between the brow and lash line, or revive drooping, heavy lids.

The placement of the new fold will depend somewhat on patient ethnicity and preference, the size of the eye, age, and more.

Toronto is a multi-ethnic city, so our Sovereign Cosmetic Surgery specialists have the pleasure of treating diverse clients from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. In recent years, Asian eyelid surgery has become a sub-specialty of blepharoplasty. Unique, patient-specific techniques are used to preserve ethnic heritage and desired features for natural-looking results.

If you’re interested in creating an upper eyelid fold definition or otherwise revitalizing your eyes, we’d love to see you for a personal consultation.

Upper Blepharoplasty Recovery

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure typically done under general anaesthetic, and it is often combined with other treatments. Upper blepharoplasty alone usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. You’ll be able to leave our comfortable recovery room with a family member or friend as soon as you feel ready. Once you are home, it’s important to have someone nearby to help you with regular tasks, because you can expect some visual blurring due to medication and swelling.

You can apply cold compresses to your eye area and antibiotic drops as your surgeon advises. It will be essential to keep your head and shoulders elevated at roughly 45 degrees when resting, as that helps limit and reduce facial swelling. Avoid bending over, heavy lifting, or any strenuous activity until it has been cleared by your surgeon. Most blepharoplasty patients are asked to pause gym / fitness routines for 3 weeks and avoid swimming pools, hot tubs, or other sources of infection until their incisions are healed.

Your eyelid sutures will likely be ready to remove by your 1-week appointment date.

Most patients are well healed with incisions closed by the 2-week point. That’s the time when you can begin wearing makeup around the eyes again if you wish. Throughout the first year, eye makeup with SPF or a foundation layer of sunblock with SPF 30+ is advised to protect your incision lines and prevent scar darkening. In most cases, the faint thin pink lines fade to nearly invisible within 6 months.
