Liposuction, or liposculpture, is an elective cosmetic surgery designed to sculpt the body.
It uses cannulas and suction to remove (aspirate) unwanted fat from targeted areas.
These may include:

Types of Liposuction
The term “liposuction” typically covers a range of techniques used to achieve desired results, depending on the patient’s needs and situation. Various methods include:
- Tumescent
- Laser-assisted
- Ultrasound-assisted methods
The same general components are included for each procedure, but the addition of heat energy or specialized solutions can reduce tissue trauma and assist with removal.
Liposuction incisions are very small.
It’s a surgical procedure, but liposuction has the reputation of a non-surgical procedure simply because the incisions are so small. It’s still invasive, but you can count on the tiny openings being just a few millimetres long and hidden in naturally discreet locations.
The cannula (narrow tube) is blunt and flexible. It’s used to vacuum fat from deep beneath your skin. With a back and forth motion, the cannula is moved through the fat layer to break it up and draw it through the tip.
In many cases, one access incision can be used to reach multiple areas, but more incisions will be created for someone who is undergoing extensive treatment on numerous regions.
Tumescent fluid injection infuses a medicated solution into the fatty areas before the suctioning begins. It contains a mixture of intravenous saline, lidocaine (local anesthetic), and epinephrine (to contract blood vessels). Infiltrating fatty tissue with this specialized mixture facilitates easier fat removal and reduces bleeding. In turn, this approach minimizes patient discomfort and post-operative bruising. The amount of fluid injected will vary depending on individual needs and the specific area treated.
Body fluid is aspirated along with the fat, so it must be replaced, and patients are carefully monitored during and immediately following surgery. The process is considered to be safe with minimal recovery time needed if liposuction is performed by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon.
Anaesthesia
Body-contouring surgery can be performed using a variety of reliable anaesthetic and sedation methods. We’ll ask you to arrange for a friend or relative to pick you up from our clinic once you feel up to leaving. You’ll likely need to wear a compression garment like Spanx for 4 to 6 weeks. You can shower the day after surgery and wash the garment before putting it on again. Medication to help reduce inflammation and discomfort will be given, but most patients describe liposuction recovery as mildly sore and easily managed.
Most patients plan for a week off after liposuction surgery. You won’t be bedridden, but you will be advised to reduce some regular activities, especially if you work out or have a strenuous job.
It can be extra practical to arrange to have a friend or family member help you with driving, child or pet care, and small errands. It can feel inconvenient to lay low for a week, but that crucial time ensures the fastest, safest jumpstart on your recovery.
Most patients begin gentle exercise at about 2 weeks. That includes StairMaster or treadmill walking, but no high-impact workouts.
